here are some past events:

  • Women in Black Silent Vigil for Peace is held the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month on Whiskey Road (across from Moe's)
    March:
  • Annual Vigil marking the anniversary of the war garnered front page coverage in both the Aiken Standard and Augusta Chronicle.

    May:
  • Aiken Peace hosted a discussion "What is GNEP? What is Reprocessing?" on nuclear issues with Shaun Burnie and Aileen Mioko Smith, Green Action Japan

    July:
  • Skip Schiel, activist and photographer, spoke about the 'Hydro politics in Israel/Palestine.
    August:
  • Dr. Stan Rich, retired USCAiken English professor, talked about his trip to Iran with the FOR (Fellowship of Reconciliation)

    October:
  • Out of Iraq Rally at O'Dell Weeks with speakers and a very good turnout, around 50 peace minded individuals. The rally was covered on the front page of the Aiken Standard next to election coverage.
  • Aiken Peace members were instrumental in organizing a van from USCAiken to the Darfur Rally in Columbia.

    Last fall:
  • local Girl Scouts, co-sponsored by Aiken Peace, placed 'Pinwheels for Peace in front of Aiken's National Guard armory.
  • Aiken Peace sponsored the Oreomobile, an idea that sprang from the mind of Ben Cohen, Cofounder of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream. Using giant Oreos we were able to see how the federal budget is divided and by making a few small changes health care and education and other programs can easily be funded, despite arguments to the contrary.

    November:
  • School of the Americas annual protest at Fort Benning, GA-3 members attended

    January 2008:
  • Stephen Leeper, President of the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation, dedicated to the elimination of all nuclear weapons, sand Takashi Terramoto, a Hiroshima survivor, spoke to a full house at the Universalist Unitarian Church, which has been an amazing host for many of our activities.



    Coming up:
  • VIGIL MARKING 6 YEARS OF THE IRAQ WAR WED MARCH 19th, 5-7pm Corner of Park & Chesterfield. Join us in calling for an end to the Iraq war, the return of our troops and handing over Iraq to the Iraqis.
    Silent vigil, 5-6pm followed by speakers at 6pm and a march at 6:30pm through downtown Aiken to Congressmen Barrett's office.



    Some of these events are free but many of the speakers are not. Aiken Peace has not asked for membership renewals or donations in quite awhile, and our funds are dwindling.     Children are encouraged to make pinwheels for peace.

    School of the Americas Annual Protest
    FRI-SUN Nov 20-22
    Ft. Benning, Columbus, GA
    Yearly protest at the gates of Ft. Benning gathers a crowd of thousands, a true gathering of the beloved community to demand the closing of the US military's training facility for Latin American soldiers that has implicated in human rights abuses. Early birds arrive Friday night, Saturday rally and conferencing, benefit concert, Sunday main vigil.
